DOCUMENTING YOUR LIFE // The Importance Of Taking Pictures

March 21, 2010   |   Posted By Renee   |   Personal

While photographing our clients, we take time to connect with them. We learn who they are and what makes their relationships tick, and through this process they are able to open up in front of our cameras. You would think that we would be able to do the same for ourselves, but Shaun and I are the definition of “awkward” when it comes to having our portraits taken. As a result we haven’t done it in ages, and have very few pictures of us together even though we have been together for nearly 7 years. This past Saturday, we decided to remedy the situation. We packed up our trusty old tripod, and headed out with the goal of getting at least one good shot! We weren’t any less awkward and most of what we took went straight to the trash can, but I am so glad we did it.

Photographers are notorious for staying behind the camera and rarely taking any pictures of themselves. From this day forward, we are pledging to turn the cameras onto ourselves more often and hope that you will too. You don’t need a fancy camera, you just need any camera. These days there are no excuses – just whip out your cell phone if it’s all you have, but be sure to hire a professional that you love for important life events. Your family isn’t going to care if you didn’t loose the last 10 lbs or if your hair isn’t perfect, but they will always cherish a picture of you. Part of me is sad that we don’t have more photos to document our history, but more than anything I’m just excited to start photographing our future!

So, here it is: our cheesy, self-timer, family portrait. It’s certainly not the best picture in the world, but I love it! By the way, check out how well Quito did! He’s so darn adorable :)  Take a look at our bio page and our Twitter page to see a couple more images from our impromptu photo session.

FLOYD AND COURTNEY // Downtown Edmonton Couples Photographer

March 13, 2010   |   Posted By Renee   |   Couples, Portraits

He’s 21, she’s 18. When Shaun and I started dating (7 years ago, wow!) he was 21 and I was 17. Everything was new and exciting and romantic; this is Floyd and Courtney right now: young and in love. Floyd booked this session a few weeks back and surprised Courtney with a bouquet of flowers and the news that they were going to have a portrait session together. So sweet!  Floyd lives in Winnipeg, so we scheduled the shoot during his visit to Edmonton. He’s back in Winnipeg now, anxiously awaiting this sneak peek!  This session was super hard to narrow down for the blog, so it’s a bit of a long one. Enjoy!

Steam poured out of this smokestack for about 2 minutes – Shaun noticed it and we rushed over to grab a few awesome shots!

MAZATLÁN, MEXICO // Vacation!

A random sampling of shots from our trip to Mazatlán, Mexico. Enjoy!

This shot was taken looking straight down from our balcony. Pretty amazing, right? Well, one day I looked down only to see the water filled with rays…let’s just say I much preferred the pool.

A super sweet cat we met on one of our adventures. On the same trip, we saw giant rays jumping in the ocean!

Mazatlán is home to so many stray dogs; these are juts a few of a massive population.

A very hilarious aquasize class at a neighboring hotel – this shot had to be taken with ninja-like skill.

Ominous, right?
